Windows 1.6 movement issue

Post by Norrik »

When I managed to get windows 1.6 crossfire working, when I try to move using the keypad, the game crashes. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am using Windows 98.

Are you using gtk client?

/* Debian GNU/Linux - rebooting is for adding hardware. */

AFAIK, 1.6 client only exists for GTK, so I'll assume it IS this client you are referring to :)

Are the keypad keys bound to something? Use the 'unbind -a' command to display all bindings. You should have keys for 'north', and so on, they should be the keypads.
Any specific key makes it crash? All?
Does it happen all the time? Randomly?

When it crashes, what is in the game 'dos' console? Could you paste?
Any hint from the OS on where it crashes? Which module?

Does it crash just after you connect to the server? After you have created your char? When you are in town?

Sorry for all the questions, they could give some hints on what happens :)

I'll check what the DOS console says, but the keys are bound to 'north', 'south', and so on. The client crashes whenever I use the movement keys. I have an older version (v. 1.5.0), and I like the older version, but it just keeps crashing every two minutes. If you can think of a way to help my older client (other than switching to Linux, which works better) I would enjoy that if fixing the newer one is too hard.
Thanks a Lot

I have found that the 1.6 gtk windows client is extremely unstable. I have it running on my other machine using windos ME and if you try to do just about anythign it crashes. And it is not giving any good error messages either. It is only giving GDK warnings.

If anyone knows how to fix this let me know please.

My only computer is running W2K, probably latest service pack. So I can't really test other platforms.

FYI, 1.6.0 client runs really fine on my comp, hardly ever crashes...

About the crashes, it may come from:
* GTK
* something in the client that xp/me/95/98 doesn't like
* other libs

I'll try to find other test machines i can use.

FYI, 1.6.0 client runs really fine on my comp too !

NOW.... Not first time.

First I installed 1.5 gcfclient.exe Win32, (worked nice.)
a few bugs, like tilecash, autoapply for sacs, and missing resists.

Then I installed 1.6 GTKClient.exe ("Ontop") just to not install GTK-Runtime. This crash all the time... I seem to have alot of keys (numpad, shift, control, directions keys that crash client fast.)

Next I installed crossfire-client-windows-1.6.0.exe (GTK) fresh.
AND GTK-Runtime-Environment-2.2.4.1.exe fresh.
AS the 1.6 client does not start and don't "see" the GTK-Runtime.
Then looking at the 1.5 client filestructure, and I copied alot of files from GTK-Runtime to the 1.6 directory, and now It seems like its working like a charm.
(Stable too, at lest for the 24 hours I have tries it.)

Why not bundle everything in a nice package and ship it... why all installs and "path patches"/copying of files.

GTK already has a nice installer. So there is no need to pack GTK libraries with Crossfire Client.
Also, other software, like GAIM, will install GTK, so we don't really want to have 2 or 3 different GTK installations, no ? :)

As for the path/DLLs not found, i don't know exactly what it is. My guess is that it's either some Windows misconfiguration, or GTK installer forgets to put itself in the path.... Or my client just sucks :)
FYI, GTK was bundled with GAIM for me, i simply added development libraries to build the client.

GTK-Runtime.

Well main problem really is that
the 1.6 client does not start and don't "see" the GTK-Runtime.

I have tried on both XP and win2k.

Maybe I just need to do something, reboot, and try again.
Well I copied files and it worked...
