I started redesigning the river face graphics, only to come to a realisation:
For the river to match the sea well, it should have a graphic set based on the sea graphics.
For the river to match the lakes well, it should have a graphic set based on the lake graphics.
Is there one base in particular I should use? Or should I make a version for each?
Which water type should I redesign rivers with?

That SilverNexus guy? You needn't worry about him.

I think the river color should match the lake water color - since that is the source of the water. It is very unlikely to change color (exceptions exist to cause the color change, but that has not been implemented in the game and is more complex then what is needed for a game, IMO.)
What about water flow or current animation(s) with the river graphics you are working on?
Keep in mind there the flow would have to be available in all directions.

Thanks for the info. I've started working on a lake-based river set.
I'll probably commit a river set without animation when I get that done, and start to work on animations.
The animations will surely take a while, though. Animations on forty images, including the branches (which have four possible flow directions each), will be over a hundred images, and easily more when the images are supposed to make a flow direction obvious, making three, four, or more frames to each animation total in at several hundred images. It is not an impossible feat, just a time-consuming one.
After this, I'll never look at rivers the same way again.
