Joining guilds?

I would like to join a guild - or several if that is allowed. How do I do that, and how do I find out what to do in each case?

Need to find or contact players who are already members of a guild and see what their requirements are for joining.

How do I find such players? It seems that guilds are only for small, secret, closed groups of players, which is hardly reasonable, since being in a guild gives a player several great advantages.

Did you try to chat about your wish with other players ?

Not really; as far as I recall, there so often seems to be only me or one or two others around. I imagine it would be very hit and miss whether I ran in to somebody from a guild.
