Item Locking + Lantern

Post by Rednaxela »

One small bug I just noticed, is that if my lantern (this is a "bright lantern" if it makes a difference) is locked (shift+left click) then I apply/unapply it, it becomes unlocked. Just a small one, but even those should be fixed if possible.

This is intresting, many other items can be applied/unapplied, and getting them unlocked in such a way is not desirable.

What client do you use to play crossfire? And did anyone else experience this as well?

I experience this as well,

with the client in debian-unstable (1.7.0-2) and with CVS from
about 1.5 month ago.

But isn't this locking/unlocking a server-side flage, so independand
of the specific client? (server in this case is bratwurst.unix-ag.uni-kl.de
running cvs from 29 Dec 2004)

I'm not sure but could this behaviour come from that a lantern (arch lantern_unlit) when it gets applied is "replaced" by "arch lantern_1",
so that the new object does not inherit this locked flag?

while speaking of lantern, they can be turned on using flint&steel to,
giving curious effects, so that when you apply such a lantern it actually
gets turned off and vice versa.

This is exactly what happens :) A new check should be added to the code which would set FLAG_INV_LOCKED on the new object if it is also set on the old one.

I don't know if this is the right place but the search for "lantern" led me here : I found a place where a pirate always carries a lit bright lantern. These a uncommon strong pirates that cut my hp down easily though i am lvl 20 atm. Nevertheless, i always get one.

But : The icon glows when unapplied and does not glow when applied. To use this lantern i need to leave it in the unapplied mode. The magic crystal fuel seems not to drain either, when kept applied. Another strange experince is, that this lantern just toggles : "un"-applied at daytime it toggles into darkness/nightfall, so maybe a reminder to "apply" it, to keep the fuel while "not" glowing.

Another hint for others: These lanterns don't use bottles of mineral oil nor can't they be refueled:
No, there is no lantern fuel. There could be.. but I didn't program it. Given
the rediculous amount of money in the game, buying another lantern isn't that
bad. The point of them is more that they last a really long time, and can be
extinguished for stealth purposes.

The regular lamp lasts alot longer than the bright one, FWIW.
You are assuming that the lanterns use oil or some such flammable substance,
but actually they work just like the streetlights in the cities, and are
powered by magic. If they used a flammable oil they might be used a weapons
or something equally dangerous. You wouldn't want people throwing around
flasks of flaming oil or tossing their lanterns into a room now would you?
Thankfully, the modern day lantern (or streetlight) is powered by a tiny
enchanted glowcrystal. The problem of course is that eventualy the
glowcrystal becomes used up and must be replaced and of course, a lantern
crystal runs out faster than a street light crystal since they are much
smaller. Since most of the cost of a lantern is the price of the
glowcrystal, it is more cost effective for the merchant to simply supply new
lanterns than provide a service to replace the crystal. By the way, if you
think lanterns are expensive, you should see the bill charged by the various
magicians guilds for supplying the larger streetlight grade glowcrystals to
the city of Navar...
It is rumoured that there was a magician from Port Joseph who constructed a
rechargable glowcystal. This is uncomfirmed however and the man has since
mysteriously vanished. The Port Joseph Wizards local 233, the first and
only group to have had a demonstration of his invention and reputedly the
last people to have seen him, is quoted as saying, 'it was a fraud, a fake,
it never happened and furthermore no one saw anything unusual later that
evening.'
