I used to play crossfire quite a bit on my old laptops, but ever since I've had this laptop with windows 7 I can't seem to get it to run properly.
I've installed GTK 2.12.9 and CF client gtk 1.12.0 and everytime I open the game I get two errors that reads:
Cannot open C:\Users\hp\AppData\Roaming/.crossfire/gtk-v1.pos:Using default window positions.
Unable to open ./bmaps.client. You may wish to download the image file to improve performance.
I can still connect to any server I want, but the map window is offplaced and I can only see part of it(usually the top of it). Also, I managed to create a character and saved in a bed to reality, because I wanted to be able to log into a character as I tweaked settings, but it did not save, everytime I join the same server it wants me to make a new character. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Client troubles.

Does such a file exist in this directory?Grumbles wrote: Cannot open C:\Users\hp\AppData\Roaming/.crossfire/gtk-v1.pos:Using default window positions.
Does the .crossfire directory exist in the Roaming directory?
Are you gaining any experience before using the Bed to Reality?Grumbles wrote: Also, I managed to create a character and saved in a bed to reality, because I wanted to be able to log into a character as I tweaked settings, but it did not save, everytime I join the same server it wants me to make a new character. If so, how much experience?
Which server(s) are you encountering this on?
It might be a problem with that server.

I followed the path to the folder, the appdata folder is a hidden folder. But when I get to the .crossfire folder, there is no gtk-v1.pos file.
As for the server, I always connect to the metalforge server, I didnt collect much xp, probably just a few hundred.
I'm just a little confused right now as I'm trying to get it set properly. The client seems to just be installed differently on my new laptop with windows 7, than my old laptop with vista. The client window itself opens up awkwardly, the map is offplaced, the items box with assorted tabs is squished, and overall it just seems to not run well on this laptop.

Resize the display windows in the client and then click on Client -> Save Window PositionGrumbles wrote:The client window itself opens up awkwardly, the map is offplaced, the items box with assorted tabs is squished, and overall it just seems to not run well on this laptop.
Left click and hold down the mouse buttons on the markers (pointed out by red arrows in the screen shot) to drag and resize.

What happens when you try the clicking on Client -> Save Window Position ?Grumbles wrote:I followed the path to the folder, the appdata folder is a hidden folder. But when I get to the .crossfire folder, there is no gtk-v1.pos file.
Does the gtk-v1.pos show up then?
I am seeing a character created (New player login) in the server logs, but no player directory by your name. Other new characters are being created every now and then as well, and I am finding their player files on the server.Grumbles wrote: As for the server, I always connect to the metalforge server, I didnt collect much xp, probably just a few hundred.

Okay, well I did try resizing the client windows, and after selecting "save window positions" I can now find the gtk-v1.pos file. However, everytime I start up the client, I still get the same two error messages, and windows never pop up as I saved them, it always pops up with the map window mis-shaped. I can deal with that, resizing it every time is a little inconvenient, but I can cope. Also, when I load it up, the tabs above the item window don't appear with the little pictures, they pop up with a group of tiny 'quarter tabs' cramped together. Which also isn't too big of a deal, I can manage with that too.
For the most part right now, I'm more concerned about the error messages popping up when I open the client. I installed the client to its default settings, I only have one user on this laptop, so its on the administrator account as well. But every time I open it, I still get both errors:
Cannot open C:\Users\hp\AppData\Roaming/.crossfire/gtk-v1.pos:Using default window positions.
Unable to open ./bmaps.client. You may wish to download the image file to improve performance.
