When I got a second apartment for my backup character, I picked apartment #4, across from my original apartment #1. I discovered that
the door seemed to be broken -- It opened normally from outside, but closed immediately when I stepped inside. But it opened again not only when I stepped on the square to the side of the entrance, but also when I was on the "bed to reality"! Yep, the apartment was open while I was "asleep" (as verified by my main character). This was actually useful for my purposes, but it sounds like a killer for multiplayer! This seems to have fixed itself while I was logged out, but it lasted quite a while.

Now that the personal apartments have been added, that map(apartments) is around for the really, really old players who bought them.
If the map or the entrance|exit is removed from the game, that would basically prevent the owners from accessing their treasure.
So, the map is kept around for historical reasons.
The issue you describe has to do with the detection range of the doors & the key and some design issues with the maps.

The apartments, obsolete?
Bah... I liked the idea of being able to give a key to another character, from comments here, apparently you can't do that with the newer version.
If you really want to phase them out, though, you should at least add some warnings to the old apt's "welcome" text, and a provision for upgrading them to new-style apts. Perhaps you could have the map teleport their stuff to the new location, and have them exchange their old keys for access....

OK, the Permanent Apartments are a big improvement!
Just moved in there... yay, space to move things around and organize them!
(And yes, plenty of room to "teleport" someone's stuff in there for an upgrade!)
As for the "optional services", I get the altar option, but just what would that 10,000 diamond payment be for? My character's not even close to that wealth level, but it would be nice to know.
I'm guessing those lockers under the Trademarket can serve the purpose of passing stuff between characters, though I hardly need them running on my own private server.
