saved games... what are those?!?

Post by The Buttery Lobster »

Howdy all. I just found this game, it seems pretty d*mn cool, especially if i could start my own server to get rid of some of that lag- (i hope the game stays free) but more on servers some other time. Right now, (let me stress that I'm a computer moron) I can't figure out how to save games- i read through all the online sight help, applying the Bed to Reality and whatnot, but I don't think my games save. I also read the post about creating save files player/save/tmp or something... i made each variety of directory in my main "crossfire" directory... but nothing shows up. (Keep in mind, I'm a moron when it comes to computers.) am i supposed to type something in the keyboard upon entering a server? Or open a certain file in the main directory? Am i supposed to download some sort of server startup kit? Is this game even free, or am i using some sort of shareware thing that has no saves? What's going on? WHERE AM I?! lol sorry... it's late an' I've been studying Organic Chiomeestry for awhile.

On an unrelated help topic, how do i start conversations with NPCs? Do i just type SAY or " and they start talking if they have somehting of relevence? On that note, if i type SAY "yadda yadda" can everyone on the server hear me? I'm going by IronBudha but i might go by The Buttery Lobster too.

Hope you can help, sorry to be a bother, Adios.

You don't need to save game. You need to apply a bed of reality, which lets you exit the game correctly.
This is the only way to 'save' the game, and disconnect from the server.

I suggest you check out the "New players" section from http://crossfire.real-time.com/.

If you play on a public server (that I strongly encourage you to do at this point) you don't usually have to worry about saving. You can simply apply bed of reality or, if you want to, use the 'save command. Simply disconnecting will save your character, too. :)

If it's a local server you need to make sure the players directory is around (share/crossfire/players or something).

Stand within the general area of the NPC and use the " (double quotes) or say <message> to speak with the NPC (they will respond if they have something to say..)

Ex:
Stand next to a guard
say open the gate! (or "open the gate!)
-IF- the guard has anything to say, he will respond.

If PC's are nearby - as in on the same map, they will be able to "hear" (see/read) your message.

If you want everyone on the server to hear you, use the shout command. It works very similar to say.

Ex:
shout I need help!

Well, thanks to that SHOUT thing, i was able to talk to another player online, and, despite his/her slight irritability, s/he aided me in grasping the difference between Diablo and CrossFire. (Whatever Battlenet is... i dont ask questions, i just play ;-) ) Needless to say, i figured out what my save situation is. Thanks for your patience! :-)
