Been playing on the main Metalforge (as Lordnapalm) and on the cf server for about two weeks (primary character there is Icarium).
I like both, I'll probably keep playing both. What I can't do is decide what character build I want to use from here on forward. I've experimented with fighters, magic users, and a little with monks. It seems that over the course of the gmae you'll be doing a lot - magic, fighting, and praying (though restricted in various ways by class/god). However, your starting choice very much dictates what you'll do *immediately*, and you have to live with that for awhile until you get the resources to hunt down the means to do more (skill scrolls, talismans, etc).
I think in the long run I want to be able to fight, and fight well. Eveyrhting else is situational/utility. Blasting things with a mage has been fun, but I hate that you either need to be in "experience" mode or "harvesting mode" (so many of the AoE spells easily wipe what's on the floor). that's probably not a problem for most people, but I guess it makes me antsy in the beginnin when decent loot is hard to come by and money is scarce. Also, getting my wizard decent fighting skills has been a slow process. I have no good gear, which is part of the problem (heh). So I know it could go more quickly.
OTOH, getting a fighter decent magic skills hasn't been fun at all. Of course, his pow is wretched so that's part of the problem. But he has so few magic points that it's just tedious.
Either way, I've had too many bad experiences not to want some prayer access from the get go. I'll probably chose something I can decently level with holy word. Too much heartache from poison at this point.
So, anyone have any favorite characters they like to start with, that they want to recommend?

I like elven sorcerors, but then I like making things hard for myself in general.
dragon monks are often a good choice if you want to be able to start leveling quickly, they will be quite weak at PvP though, due to more limited equipment options. - a humanoid with a dragonslayer of devourors will normally kill you in the arena. Also they tend to top out at spell casting a little lower - you can't create a custom weapon to give 30 Pow/INT/WIS, so you probably won't achieve that (and the big mana/grace bonuses that go with it).
