Asking this question on a forum dedicated to the game isn't likely to get you many negative responses to that question. FWIW I started playing crossfire a little over 2 years ago, and I'm still here.

It is one of those games which is vast enough that once you get into it, you will not easily stop playing.

download a client, pick one of the public servers, and try it out, you have nothing to lose except all your free time for the rest of your life :D

well, if you liked nethack, defiantly. it takes a little bit of learning, but the learning curve is quite spread out, so you can easily start playing without much learning.

although you probably want to pick your starting race/character carefully, as it can really alter your view on the game. a gaea worshiping paladin is probably a god thing to start as, so you can touch a bit on spells, but also have a weapon to back you up.

I'm not much into RPGs but crossfire addicted me. The world is quite big,
there are lots of spells and skills to learn, and there is months of fun in the game.
And it keeps improving, as it is in active development.

And if you are bored, feel free to download one of the map editors and make a map
and ask the devs or server admins to upload it.
Or even contribute in another way: write a tutorial or other documentation,
or make graphics or make maps or write code or make new monsters....

The following post is made IMNSHO 8)

The easiest (best?) race(s) to start out with and learn how to play are a human paladin or warrior and dwarf warrior.

Why?

The stat bonuses:
For dwarves favor the fighter class, but provide an initial penalty to the spell casting classes (which includes prayers). The human has no benefits, but does not have penalties either.

Both races and classes do not have restrictions on spell access *until* your character selects a god/cult to follow or worship.

Neither race or class has any restrictions on equipment or other gear. They can wield or use any weapon and armour. Once again, which cult/god your character chooses to worship will have an affect on this.

Neither race or class makes you vulnerable to any particular attack type such as fire for a wraith or troll, etc. This can be a hard learning curve when first starting out.

Why not an elf?
The have a penalty to their starting Str and Con stats, plus they are vulnerable to Gnarg's holy word.

Why not a dragon/fire hatchling?
The planing for the elemental focus isn't all that intuitive. The armor restrictions (can't wear any) can make some of the early levels tough - unless you have a scoop on some magical stuff.

Why not trolls?
The high digestion rate - they eat alot of food. Unless you know of what maps to visit for a good supply of food and which ones to avoid due to their weakness to fire - expect many deaths as a result.

Why not wraiths?
Vulnerable to fire and all holy word based spells.

Why not a fireborn?
Armour and other gear restrictions, vulnerable to cold and other attack types.

Later on, playing these races can be a fun challenge. But, it's important to have a good "newbie" experience first.
"Put another, more succinct way: don't complain, contribute. It's more satisfying in the long run, and it's more constructive."

Leaf: excellent summary, I think it probably should go somewhere in http://crossfire.real-time.com/guides/c ... index.html for the benefit of anyone else looking into handling character creation....

whoops, totally missed starting on a smart character. jumped right in as a dragon and plowed ahead...dragons are a good class if youll keep on going no matter what, pretty stong, but not to good spellcasters. but their metabolism thing is a nice supprise.

although with any character, just remember to eat often.
