I use Debian(linux) and had a similar error, it was caused by the permision in the /var or /temp directories. If the server you connect to is in your computer may be because it is actually not running, try typing: ps aux [enter] in prompt, there "crossfire" must appear, if it doesn't, run the server ...

the one i use most often is an alchemist wraith,
but i also have a fireborn and a human.

I have a similar problem, but in the GTK client, when i switch to Athena Client it doesn't happen, i do not know why it is.
