One thing I would like to see: a place where a player can go to get information about maps and other things in the area, perhaps in the form of a shop where you can buy instructions about how to get to difficult to find maps.

Is this a good idea? And if not, why?

The only problem is finding the information, anyone who would be able to implement it would not need it, and anyone wanting something like this would be unable to do it very accuratly, and you are talking of over 4000 maps remember.

At present there are message boards in major towns which show what quests are in nearby locations. Those quest lists are not exhaustive by any means but they do give you an idea of some places to go to.

Hmm, but surely there must be a way to sort of list the info? I don't know enough about the way the maps functions, but I think a starting point (if I were to do this work) could be to simply list the coordinates of all the entrances to sub-maps in the bigworld and then go on from there, loosely speaking. And then rank the maps according to monster levels, jsut so that is somebody, say I, were desperately running in circles and couldn't find an interesting place to go to, it would be possible to find out where to look and also have an idea about whether it would be too difficult.

The interface to this information could be something like a shop where they could help you find something that was vaguely suitable, either the server gives you something that's not too far removed from your level or the information is priced according to difficulty.

I can speak from experience; all the desired features that you are looking for will have to be scritped or 99% automated otherwise it's more work then anyone would want to take on and won't stay updated.

As far as map entrance coordinates, Ryo_ designed a GPS like device. It works, but is not available through normal means (shops, dungeons, etc.) since the intent was for a unique map to have this device as a reward. The map has not been developed yet. I don't think anyone is working on it yet/either.

So, in theory, Crossfire could have their own geo trackers..

Tower of Demonoly is X leagues north and Y leagues east of Santo Dominion port; Z leagues north of Scorn gates; W leagues west of Darcap, etc.

Er, umm.. maybe not.

Well, if you go into pshop27, there is special faery dragon tet tells you coords. :P
Put it together myself, just say to it, "Firegod", and it will spit out the coords.
Now, be that it may a spoiler, they do have to go into a private map, so it is perfectly within the rules.
All I had to do is not shout the coords and I'm golden.

Bort I dont think that solves the issue brought up here, his problem is finding maps within maps, I.E. Serpents pit in Lake Country. Your dragon may tell people how to reach lake country, but then they have no clue how to reach the snake pit, let alone realize that it is a *** level (No im not insinuating level 100+, Im simply allowing all possibilities to be seen) That is what Jan has asked for if I am not correct. Even Ryos device does not suit this exactly "unless" when you enter a map it lists the difficulty rating etc. And I dont know if im completely off my rocker, but could not difficulty be measured by level of traps, strongest monster in area(in an area like AP a certain slug etc.) and then have an item that if detected tells you this difficulty?

A map editor comes in handy when you need to find a certain location after backtracting.
But even then, a map editor fails. I still have'nt been able to backtrak a way to get idaten boots. Indeed, there is no one way to get to a certain place.

this is where grep is your friend, start backtracking, then, when you need to find the entry to a map, 'grep -R mapname *' in a directory containing all the maps (which you must have to be using the map editor anyway...)

Not everybody has access to a map editor for one, and for two not everybody wants to use one, as many consider this cheating, if its being used for your own benefit etc. As I stated, Jan wants an ingame feature(meaning not map editor or something else like that) but ingame! That allows him/her to find maps and know their general level.
