I don't have the prayer skill unless I use a holy symbol - and I don't seem able to gain experience in praying only with a holy symbol - is that correct? If so, this is something that ought to be changed, since there is a lot of prayers that require more than lvl 1.

what you need to do is learn a lvl one prayer and cast that. It can be slow to start off that way, but remember you are learning something new.

You can also party with someone who has prayer yo give you a jump start (in a sense a mentor to help guide you)

Oddly enough one has to cast HARM prayers to gain any skill. So, learn a level one harming prayer and go kill something with it.

Or, use Holy spells (holy word, holy orb, etc.) against enemies of your chosen god or against undead monsters if you are not following a god right now.

You may need to wear additional +WIS items to give you enough grace to effectively slay your target monster(s).
