Okay total newbie question time.

I've trawled the FAQ and various readme files. Caught a vague reference to potions. I've only found temporary stat increases thus far.
Is it possible to up stats permanently? If so how?

Find Potions of *** (Inteligence, Wisdom, Power, etc). Quaffing those gives you a permanent stat increase in that area (whatever *** is) up to your race maximum..

Is the increase always permanent? Does the effect become immediately apparent?

Or do I need to use a (whatever) of self knowledge to see the improvement?

Use the command 'statistics to see your current stat levels and more.

one caveat to add there, permenant stat potions are the ones with the letters on, the ones without the letters on are the potions for the spells in question (ie a brown? potion of strength gives a temporary increase, one with an 's' on is permenant) However it seems like the temporary ones are really very rare indeed, especially considering how cheap they are.
