Please you provide more information, such as: operating system, server version, how you installed the server, ...

I had a similar problem when I tried to get a server going on XP.

The installer did not create a folder for the character save files on its own. as soon as I did that my chars saved themselves just fine

You need to create a <crossfire directory>\var\players directory.
Also, making a <crossfire>\tmp can't hurt

Well, if directories & permissions are ok, i don't see why it can't save.....
And i checked, installer indeed creates var\players directory.

Updates archetypes/artifacts (which is what you are probably asking for) are only available through CVS. Instructions for getting server are located at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=13833 , the module name you want is 'crossfire', which will get you the whole server tree. You will want to replace your files in <your crossfire server>\share with the ones in <crossfire you got from cvs>\lib.

You can also get the 'arch' module, then use the collect scripts from the server's lib\adm directory to generate the archetype file manually.

Sorry if this isn't really clear...
