Crossfire server on an android tablet...

Post by Reven »

For the ultimate in nerd heaven, I have actually gotten the crossfire server running on a tablet. Not even really a tablet... a Pandigital e-book reader. Why? Partially because I can, and partially, because it actually makes sense...

How:
I developed a method for running Debian Linux from a chroot jail on a Pandigital Novel android-based e-book reader. This works because Android uses a Linux kernel. If you are interested in doing the same thing you need a rooted Android device that has a decent filesystem compiled into the kernel (ext2, JFS). The method on the url above should work, with minor variations, on almost any device. Once inside the Linux chroot, I was able to get and compile the crossfire server with little trouble.

Why?:
Is this just a novelty? Let me tell you a story. I have run my family's crossfire server for years from an ancient (15 year old) HP PARISC workstation running Debian instead of its original HP/UX. Why use this machine? After all as Nicolas pointed out on IRC, a fairly good computer is cheap to buy. I use it because it is built like a tank and will last forever. I serve in my country's navy, and can go away to sea for up to six months. I need to know that the stuff I set up for my family will be reliable while I'm gone.

But my old reliable workstation is a little laggy with many players connected at once. This little tablet is six times faster, has more storage on a remvable SD card than my server has on its hard drive, has no moving parts, and has a built-in battery backup. In short, I have an 800MHz RISC server that should be incredibly reliable.

If anyone is interested in doing something like this, I would be happy to help get it working.
