10:45:37 < xeno> damn, the fireborn should have night vision! it's out of character not to.
10:45:47 < xeno> I mean, should he wear a torch?
10:45:55 < Ryo_> lol
10:46:01 * Ryo_ pictures that scene
10:46:04 < hoxu> Actually, it should have more like a permanent glow
10:46:16 < hoxu> So monsters notice it more easily, too
10:46:18 < Ryo_> like valriel followers
10:46:22 < hoxu> aye
10:46:32 < xeno> that too
No more to be said.

Sounds like a good idea. But it should really be permanent glow.

Any volunteers to add it? ;)

fireborn might have really poor night vision you know...

If you were an energy being and you had no eyes I imagine you would see by detecting radiation, no? You might have really crappy night vision because you were adapted to the amount of radiation in the day, or in a firepit. You might need some additional light source when it was a cloudy day, you need so much light... Then again, maybe you have IR or some such so you could pick out heat radiation. It could go either way I think. If almost every race has excellent night vision however, not much point is there...
Then again IR vision would only detect heat right? It would be groovy to actually code IR vision to work this way so that it wasn't just adding illumination, but actally showed more along the lines of heatsources like living creatures and fire and water and stuff but not so much more heat neutral stuff. (show invisible halfling, but not the huge stone golem or the pile of gold...) That would make night vision a bit more interesting, some races could have IR(dwarves, fireborn), some just have really good night vision(elves, dragons, halforc...) it could be processed in the client maybe? Might not be playable though...
Just thought I'd drop in and say that.

Fireborn should glow though - I can't imagine them hiding in the dark...

a burning ball 'o' fire would produce its own light, no?

kinda like infra-vision in diablo I? i like the idea but only heat sources should show up (cold objects would dissapear in the background heat and possibly be used to hide warm objects).

Oh certainly but how much light would it need to be able to see well is another story.
If you evolved in a sun - your ... might glow in the dark but you might find a 1000 watt bulb pretty dim indeed...

I see your point, but just b'cos there sight is not improved dose not mean they should not improve the visibility for others.

Oh, ya, I'm all for having them glow. I just wanted to point out that that doesn't necessarily have to mean that they can see well in the dark.. My issue is that there are just too many races that can see in the dark - kind of cuts down on the fun. Puts the lantern manufacturers out of business. Now it would be really interesting (to me - but I have a warped sense of interesting) if the fireborn did allow others to see better in the dark, but could not itself see very well in the dark. It is probably not practical in fact to do this, but if it could be done in an practical and interesting way it would be nifty.
Of course having fireborn glow would make them really crummy at hiding and if they gave off any heat they would be lousy at invisibility too (then again if they can control their radiation (well they can pick up stuff right...)maybe they could hide really well or even go invisible at will (or possiblly go invisible but take some damage when not radiating). But back to the point if they are glowing away then they will attract attention from monsters...

I thought eyes were devices for detecting radiation?

If that was the case, then I guess light reflecting in the items he wants to see would be very visible, so that for example sunshine would work ok. But wearable lightsources would just make it harder to separate the real items from your lightsource.

That way, there's two modes, the first one is to simply detect light reflected on the items from the sun. The other is to use your own light as a radar ping. That way it would be natural if you had very good nightvision when focusing, and otherwise none...
Maybe the nightvision could consume something, like food or spellpoints?

That would be very cool. You could also hide walls... maybe you could just walk around seing the world as it is presented in the magic mapping, but with the walls removed?

I just have "invoke X-ray" bound to a hotkey and just keep casting that - seems to work great
