How do I create a character? 
Character creation is done in the client, and each character exists on a server.
Connect to a server (either one you run yourself or someone else's - a list of publically available ones are provided when you start your client) and you will be asked for your character's name. Pick any name that isn't already in use, choose a password (preferably something secure-ish that you don't use for anything important) and enter it twice.

Because each character exists on the server it is created on, you will need to connect to the same server again in future to play the same character.
