but will there still be the horrible syntax that the zope wiki uses?

and the broken recent changes list?

and the lack of a per-user watchlist?

I dont know.
Maybe the wiki pkg needs to be reinstalled to a new version, and it might have all the features.
Then again, I believe Plone can be modified to work wiki wise.

the current wiki is on freezope though, will that allow upgrading to arbitrary versions? (this is also a concern with wikicities, but at least upgrades there won't still be adding basic functionality)

just another data point to consider. Battle for wesnoth (arguably crossfire's closest 'competitor') have migrated their wiki recently, they chose mediawiki.

their design is actually pretty different looking compared to the classic mediawiki look, http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/HomePage

if anyone knows the wesnoth developers, it might be worthwhile to ask them about the decision they made (the alternitives they considered and rejected, and why).

Wow, dokuwiki looks nice and complete, yet lightweight.
Here's the system requirements for it. (However that doesn't say anything about the ram used and such)

I looked for feedback from those who expressed interest in using the wiki, but here's the other criteria..

Some sort of packaged wiki that would allow for easier updates and upgrades. DokuWiki and Moin Moin have that; Media Wiki does not.

Relatively light weight or easy to manage hosting or configuration requirements. DokuWiki and Moin Moin have that; JSP Wiki, Freezope, Zwiki and Media Wiki does not.

Reasonably clear and easy to understand text mark-up, specifically the ability to link pages without Having To Use Mixed Case (or HavingToUseMixedCase). This elminated Kwiki and WiLiKi.

The ability to customize or theme the wiki so that it doesn't look like every other wiki out there.

Moin Moin has a nice preview while you edit ability, which I have to admit was a personal preference of mine by not needed.

So, with that...

I'm in the process of setting up or hosting either DokuWiki or Moin Moin. I'll be creating the poll next for those interested.
