Inter server protocol.

Post by Pathor »

From Sweden (and my ISP, Telia), I can only play on one server without a lot of lag . Often that server is quite empty when I'm playing. If I were a newbie needing help I would probably have given up (I'm not much of an IRC user). A few muds have "intermud protocols" to transfer text messages, mail and who-is-on-information between servers. It would be nice to have something similar added to CF servers. That way the servers would feel less empty even if you are the only player. With some shared who list and the ability to tell/shout to users of other servers it would be easy for newbies to get some help even on "empty" servers. The normal shout should probably not be heard, but there could be some special inter-server channel and command to use, like some newbie help channel. If the same username is used on two different servers, one could write something like "tell user@server msg" (where the server name only has to be long enough to be unique and perhaps the servers could have some "in server name" so there won't be ten servers all starting with "crossfire").

Personaly I would also like some way to transfer characters between servers, but that is probably impossible due to different servers' different exp levels and such. It would mostly be fun to use to take your normal characters for a visit in the bigworld without having to spend a lot of time getting a new character up to level on the new server to be able to explore more of the world.

Yeah, I think that would be neat.

If I recall right, this was discussed at least once in IRC. I think the major problem is different versions between servers. Another thing is the fact that the servers are not "controlled" in any way. I hope you get the point :P

But I agree it could be cool - to move your character to another server with a better latency and so on.

A few years ago someone even had the idea to create an irc-like network. So you connect to the fastest server but then play on one main server with everybody else.

I still like that idea :)
