What is the job of a DM? Do they do any quests?

Post by Zortan »

By definition.. Don't DM's send people on hunts/adventures? I remember in my MUD days when I was a DM, I'd create these quests.. living hints, etc.. Having people (let's say) rescue a princess, or you would "possess" a creature and run from people (have people try to capture the thief), or have them escort me back to a safe place (again, I would be in posession of a creature).. The prize..I would create special reward items (nothing major, maybe rename an item or something, or give them a token which could later be used to buy special stuff, etc)..

I haven't seen much that on metalforge, other than occassional rescue from being disconnected improperly.. Maybe I come on at the wrong times...

Well, first DMs need to be online.
I for one sometimes connect on the evenings, but don't always have the time to make a quest.

I think week-ends are best for me, since i have some time - but then again, maybe even sundays, not the best day for many people :)

And yes, DMs can do all you say. Last fun i had was put rewards in Scorn so that people had prizes (free apartment extender, stat potions, stuff like that)

Remember too that setting up quests can take time, especially if you do something complicated. And it's more rewarding for a DM if there are many people participating, which leads to the issue of the level of the quest - not all players have the same level, thus some things may be too hard for some, or too easy for others.

Better do some quests than none at all... I am yet to participate in one, but it may be because I'm not on at the same time as the DM's..
