Which mental level for alchemy and such?

Post by Atan »

I've been trying to use alchemy /bowyer /etc... with a cauldron / workbench /etc... following the appropriate formulae since I first created my character. Now I'm level 11 in mental skills (over level 20 overall) and still even for the simplest formula (7 waters to create water of the wise) I either get a slug or an explosion or nothing at all, but never the desired result. :?

I've checked in this forum for a post on these skills and found an exact description of the procedure I've been using, so that's not the problem. Then it must be my skill level.

So, can someone tell me from what mental level on there's more than 0% chance of success so I avoid exploding 2 cauldrons at every new level until I reach it?

Thanks,

Atan

On another server, my char was >30 mental, and still i failed alchemy from time to time....
Haven't tried with latest skill system, but planning on that soon :)

I just hope you can do enough without destroying cauldron/... to actually level up lol

This may not be the cause, but...

What about your Luck score?

You get -1 to your luck score for each PK.

X kills -> -X Luck

Use the perceive self spell to see this info or if you have access to the server, check the playerfile.

Now somewhat ok

Well I managed to level up a bit and now I finally managed to create a couple of waters of the wise, although I still get mostly slags for other recipes, and sometimes booms.

In fact I maybe managed to produce some water of the wise before my first post, but didn't notice it, because I still found water inside the cauldron and thought that nothing had happened when in fact I needed to id it to see that maybe it was indeed what I wanted!

Thanks for the tips, though...

Another similar topic, and there it's not a matter of improper id or just failing more than 50% of the time as was the case for alchemy: consecrate

consecrate is a level 8 prayer, but even at level twenty-something in wisdom skills I get the message that I'm not powerful enough to consecrate this altar, "this altar" being e.g. the one in my own apartment, which I presume is the one that I would most likely be able to consecrate to my own deity, it being neutral to begin with and having being bought with my own personal hard gained cash (and presently representing a basically useless piece of furniture in my apartment).

Any idea for that one? And if say, one needs level 50 to be able to consecrate anything, then why is it a level 8 prayer and not a level 50 praver?

Thanks,

Atan

What about other random/neutral altars - does consecrate work on those?

Was the altar in your apartment consecrated to a god, and now you are trying to change it to another one?

Is this on a smallworld or bigworld server? Or if a public server, which one?

A long time ago, before the permanent temples in Scorn, there was nothing but random altars. The spell was level 8 because the only way to gain the benefits of praying on an altar was to convert one (city hall of scorn, outside one of the towers in Brest, etc.) to your deity and this "needed" to be available to players at a relative early level.

Since that time, the permanent temples were added and IIRC a bug was found where people could consecrate these altars and the unsuspecting player could pray on the altar and stuff the penalties for doing so. The server code was modified to prevent people from consecrating "permanent" altars - perhaps that has now broken consecrating random altars.

To consecrate an altar, you need to be above a certain level. If i remember correctly, the default level, used for Scorn's apartment, is 30.... So that'd explain why you can't consecrate.

Thanks leaf and ryo for the hints!

After reading your reply, I went to look for such a thing, which I hadn't found since I started trying the spell consecrate. Some help took me to the right places and... wheez... it worked!

Notice that other permanent altars can be especially weird, e.g. the one in the undead church of scorn simply yields the message "you are not standing over an altar"!
leaf wrote: Was the altar in your apartment consecrated to a god, and now you are trying to change it to another one?
No. It's the personal apartments, the ones that are specific to each prayer, where you have to pay 12 holy symbols to get your own personal altar inside it, and then you pay... and you can't use it :-(
leaf wrote: Is this on a smallworld or bigworld server? Or if a public server, which one?
Well, it's a public bigworld server, namely crossfire.jyu.fi, a friendly non-PK server with very nice people around.

Well that's good news! It means I'm not that far away from my own personal altar of Lythander :)

But really, I think that if you're paying for your personal altar, the least you expect is to be able to consecrate it. Otherwise, it's useless

So this becomes a suggestion: ok to protect altars already devoted to a god from reconsecrating, but let neutral ones (the ones in personal apart are the only permanent neutral I know) be consecrated at low level...
